Did music choose you?

100% and I’m so grateful it did! Wouldn’t have it any other way.

The best thing about your journey so far?

Meeting new people from different backgrounds and cultures, sharing my music with my audience, connecting with amazing artists and just overall getting better at my craft.

How would you describe the music you create?

It’s a blend of Afro Pop, Soul and R&B. I sing/rap in English, French and Pidgin.

Your song ‘Joli’ has been making noticeable waves, what’s the message in there?

It’s a feel good song. A nice uplifting blend of melodies you could easily vibe to in a bar, club or on the highway. In this record I’m talking to a “joli gars” which means pretty boy, basically expressing my feelings for him!

Your thoughts on African music in general?

Proud to be part of the movement, we have a lot to offer and it’s only UP from here!

What are the positives that you have experienced during this pandemic?

Taking some time for myself. Self-love has been eye opening!

How would you describe your time spent in South Africa?

Too short!!! I wish I stayed longer! I loved everything from the people to the culture to the street wear fashion! Can’t wait to go back!

Any new material you’re working on?

My first album, my baby!!! Can’t wait to share when the time is right. Stay tuned.

What would you tell aspiring female artists?

This is what I would advise any artist: Believe in yourself, surround yourself with the good people and never give up!

Focalistic On Quarantined Tarantino, Rap In 2020 And Being The Hardest Working Artist

You’ve created such a major wave in the industry, was this always the plan?

Thank you. This is only 2% of the plan…I want to be the greatest ARTIST from Africa, so I am glad there is progress on this long journey ahead of me.

You always represent the city Pretoria, what do you love about the city?

What I love about Pretoria is the fact that the city taught me how to be comfortable with myself. It taught me a lot about accepting people from different walks of life, as it is so rich in culture. Pretoria is where I found myself, and I will always be grateful for that.

Describe rap in 2020?

Rap in 2020 has moved from the simple criteria of word play. It is deep. For me, it is about an unbreakable connection with the audience. If the person listening cannot relate, then it is easily classified as whack. The said connection is only attained by genuine music and genuine storytelling.

How are you setting yourself apart from other young rappers?

I am the hardest working, and I am the truest to myself. As a result, the saying “Ase Trap ke Pina tsa ko Kasi” means so much because it is how I decided to set myself apart.

Talent and hard work always win, but how do you take time to chill out?

I usually play FIFA on my PlayStation 4 to clear my mind and chill out. It is therapeutic and also helps keep my competitive personality in check.

Of all the music you’ve released, have a favourite one?

My favorite is always my most recent release. In this case, I am always listening to ‘Quarantined Tarantino’ right now as I feel that it is the most recent masterpiece from myself.

What’s the plan for your fans to never forget the name Focalistic?

I don’t try too hard for that. I am one person who believes in genuine connections. For me, listening to my music and if you love the vibe, I will forever be there for you. I am like your best friend in music, but, in the most genuine way, and that’s how I will be forever remembered.

If you could, what would you change about the industry you’re in?

I would change the opportunities given to people without influence. What I mean by this is we need to give more attention to up and coming artists, as they are extremely talented but just need more attention for them to prosper. The power to change and elevate South Africa lies in the youth and undiscovered talent.

Any newer music you plan on dropping this year?

For now, people need to keep checking out my new release titled #QuarantinedTarantino, which is out on ALL streaming platforms. But, I’m always in the studio so we may never know what can happen, maybe I will surprise my fans…Squad Sa Maradona are always ready for new music.

What keeps you motivated to keep working towards your goals

I’m always motivated by my mom. She managed to take us from Garankuwa in a backroom shack to a double story house. I just want to be able to thank her substantially and ensure that her, and my daddy in heaven are proud of me.

Refilwe Matabane On Her DJ Title, Music And What Sets Her Apart

How did you get into DJ’ing?

I have always loved music for as long as my memory serves me. During my recovery, after being diagnosed with clinical depression and anxiety, I wanted to find something that would be my personal therapy. I then decided to attend Pussy Party workshops at Kitcheners once a week and my journey literally began there.

What genre do you play?

I play underground and old school Hip-Hop. Occasionally, I play old school House music too. I also play a lot of alternative Rap and Pop. It depends on my mood or the event I have been booked for.

Biggest platform you’ve been given to play at so far?

So far, I have played at Tshwanefontein. I was also been given the opportunity to play for Budweiser at BudX The Rhythm hosted by Punk Mbedzi.

Congratulations on AfroPunk Joburg, anything exciting you’ve got planned for that?

Thank you! Right now I am planning a lot around it – so branding, visuals etc. WE GOING BIG! I just shouldn’t lose focus on putting the perfect set together, I genuinely want it to be memorable.

What do you believe sets you apart from other DJs?

I wouldn’t say that there’s much that sets me apart, however, I do try and alternate between genres as often as I can so that I don’t sound redundant. As a woman, I think I’ve taken advantage of being known for the old school music I play, considering how young I am (I have the older peeps in my family to thank for this taste and knowledge).

Top 3 items you never leave the house without?

My normal headphones, lipstick and my phone. Even when I’m on the move, there has to be music playing.

What do you love about music?

Besides many other things, it truly is a healing component. It’s spiritual and has the power to influence ANYTHING. It carries so much inspiration, emotion and variety.

Plans for the rest of 2019?

I’d like to travel more. Get more major gigs and secure more deals that align with my brand which I am currently building.

Where can people hear your dope sets and what are you social media handles?

I play almost everywhere in Johannesburg, hopefully some international gigs will be secured in the near future too.

Ginger Trill On Music, Relevance And Always Staying Focused

The Ginger Trill story, where did it all begin?

The Ginger Trill story began long ago, probably back in Potchefstroom before I was called Trill. My friends and I had been making music and cutting demos since high school. I always knew I loved music but it wasn’t until I turned 22 that I knew that I wanted pursue a career in music. 

The come up and remaining relevant, what are your thoughts?

My come up was different and I think no two come-ups are the same really, I’m from the school of the hard knocks. So many failures, mistakes and lessons that helped me grow, not only as an artist, but as a person as well. Seven years since I released my debut album and I’ve learned that relevance is almost like having a “buzz”…it’s all about what you do with the traction you gain.

South African Hip-Hop is hella right now, agree? What are your reasons?

Agreed, the local Hip-Hop scene is lit right now. I think the cycle before this generation had a lot to do with the shift, we’ve never had a scene so full of young independent artists making so much bank off of Rap music, EVER! Thanks to the arrival of prodigies like Nasty C & A-Reece, the industry is opening up.

As an artist that expresses themselves through words and beats, where do you plug in inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from the music I bump into mostly, and the things I read, the conversations I have, even the shows I watch on TV or on the net, anything that stimulates my mind really. 

How would you describe your music in one word?

Piff. 

Any new material you’re yet to release this year?

Finishing my work on “Tales of the High & Mighty”, a joint tape with myself and Top Goggs from Dizzy Monks. 

Have a favourite track to date that you’ve released?

Too many to mention, and I think they switch every season or year, but right now? I’d say #Money is my favourite song by myself, that record is HARD. 

The plan is to never give up right? What keeps you focused and going?

What keeps me going is purpose, and my family, they are the people I draw my strength and motivation from and of course, my Lord and Saviour.

All Praise To The Ghost: Sabelo Ncube On New Single ‘Ncube’ And Being An All-Round Artist

You’ve just recently released your new single titled ‘Ncube’, how’s the response so far?

The response has been great, people have been waiting for this to drop so it’s a relief to see it so well received.

Any inspiration behind Ncube?

I am Ncube, so it’s inspired by my character, heritage and my family. I am a proud South African and I wanted that to resonate through this song.

When did you find your way into the rap game?

I started rapping in primary school and have been writing songs since I was 8. But I can say I’ve dedicated the past 5 years of my life solely to music.

As an artist, how do you put your body of work together and who would you like it to speak to?

Well music is vast and there are many genres. I like to capture an idea first and then break down all the things that make the idea what it is. So I do a lot of research, coupled with introspection and hope that somewhere in the balance, people will relate to the sound. I genuinely hope that my work speaks to anyone who loves music.

Why the name Ghost?

The name was given to me by my friends because I lived between Port Elizabth and Johannesburg and would sporadically appear and vanish on any given weekend. They started calling me “Los the lost Ghost from the East Coast and the West Coast”, clearly this wouldn’t work as a rap alias, so I shortened it to Ghost.

Have a specific favourite track from all the music you’ve released so far?

Hands down has to be my latest single Ncube.

Something people don’t know about you?

Lol. I’m not into clubs and crowds. I know, it’s weird for an artist.

Studio or live perfomances? Have a preference or are you in tune with both?

I absolutely love to create. That’s my zone. I’ve always said that I’m a studio artist because of my ability to relax and deliver on ANY mandate. But once that’s done, there’s nothing that beats the exhilaration of standing in front of  audiences and showcasing my art. So both. Haha.

The game plan for Ghost and music going forward?

To put it basically, The plan is to expose the world to an authentic South African artist, with a no-nonsense attitude to creating great music.

SubVerse On ‘O Vaya Le Mang’ Single, Upcoming Album And Motswako

How did you find your way into the rap game?

Growing up in the ‘90s, it was almost impossible escaping the influence of Hip Hop culture. My brother kept a steady supply of TDKs and recorded music videos as well. That’s what really built the foundation of my love for the rap game. From then, the early South African Hip Hop scene is what convinced me that it could really be done and I started writing raps of my own.

O Vaya Le Mang…How has the single being received so far?

The track has received quite a lotta love and we don’t expect that to slow down now that the video is out (https://youtu.be/HG5vTXzyQ2A)!! I’m mad excited about the video release and making sure everybody sees it!

You’ll be releasing your second album since 2013, how much work was put into it?

The work is still happening and I’m actually in studio at the moment putting tracks down. I’ve got some special tracks lined up and the style and theme is different from anything I’ve put out before!

Do you have a favourite track on The Take Off album?

It’s way too early to pick a favourite. I can never single out one track but there are a few collaborations up my sleeve that I’m secretly going crazy over!

Tswellopele…How did the album mould your career?

More than anything, Tswellopele showed me the power of will and perseverance. That we (PGP Music) were able to put out such a solid project together, shoot videos, sells CDs, set up gigs and perform – to do all of that independently is an amazing feature. That will forever be a source of inspiration for me. Also, the response that we got was an indication to me that we’re doing something right. There were a lot of lessons that we learnt in the artistic and business sense…I could go on for a while!

What inspires your lyrics?

Experiences and observations. It could be something as simple as something I see or read, or a memory. There’s way too many sources of inspiration!

Motswako, what does it mean to you?

Motswako is the power of expressing yourself on your own terms! It’s powerful stuff if you think about the achievements that have been clocked in the name of Motswako. And I truly believe we ain’t seen nothing yet!

Maintaining consistency in the industry, how do you plan to do that?

I think maintaining consistency is purely a matter of trusting one’s talent and skill. There’s way too many trends and overnight buzzes to try keep up with. If you know what the end goal is, consistency shouldn’t be a fear-driven thing.

Food or FIFA?

I’m tempted to say FIFA…but this completely depends on the time of day, hahaha!

If you weren’t in the Hip-Hop game what would you be doing with your life?

I’d still be in the music scene in some other role. I’m way too passionate about music to imagine myself not involved in one way or another. That and sports.
