You’ve created such a major wave in the industry, was this always the plan?

Thank you. This is only 2% of the plan…I want to be the greatest ARTIST from Africa, so I am glad there is progress on this long journey ahead of me.

You always represent the city Pretoria, what do you love about the city?

What I love about Pretoria is the fact that the city taught me how to be comfortable with myself. It taught me a lot about accepting people from different walks of life, as it is so rich in culture. Pretoria is where I found myself, and I will always be grateful for that.

Describe rap in 2020?

Rap in 2020 has moved from the simple criteria of word play. It is deep. For me, it is about an unbreakable connection with the audience. If the person listening cannot relate, then it is easily classified as whack. The said connection is only attained by genuine music and genuine storytelling.

How are you setting yourself apart from other young rappers?

I am the hardest working, and I am the truest to myself. As a result, the saying “Ase Trap ke Pina tsa ko Kasi” means so much because it is how I decided to set myself apart.

Talent and hard work always win, but how do you take time to chill out?

I usually play FIFA on my PlayStation 4 to clear my mind and chill out. It is therapeutic and also helps keep my competitive personality in check.

Of all the music you’ve released, have a favourite one?

My favorite is always my most recent release. In this case, I am always listening to ‘Quarantined Tarantino’ right now as I feel that it is the most recent masterpiece from myself.

What’s the plan for your fans to never forget the name Focalistic?

I don’t try too hard for that. I am one person who believes in genuine connections. For me, listening to my music and if you love the vibe, I will forever be there for you. I am like your best friend in music, but, in the most genuine way, and that’s how I will be forever remembered.

If you could, what would you change about the industry you’re in?

I would change the opportunities given to people without influence. What I mean by this is we need to give more attention to up and coming artists, as they are extremely talented but just need more attention for them to prosper. The power to change and elevate South Africa lies in the youth and undiscovered talent.

Any newer music you plan on dropping this year?

For now, people need to keep checking out my new release titled #QuarantinedTarantino, which is out on ALL streaming platforms. But, I’m always in the studio so we may never know what can happen, maybe I will surprise my fans…Squad Sa Maradona are always ready for new music.

What keeps you motivated to keep working towards your goals

I’m always motivated by my mom. She managed to take us from Garankuwa in a backroom shack to a double story house. I just want to be able to thank her substantially and ensure that her, and my daddy in heaven are proud of me.

Kgadi Mothotse On Ambitiouz Entertainment And Public Relations In South Africa

How did you get into Public Relations?

I studied at a media school, Boston Media House and fell in love with the concept of creating ideas strategically to build a certain perception of the brand or whatever it is you are trying to achieve with your consumers. My personality was also well fitted for the career path that I chose because of the fact that I am so confident, I believe in my ability to create stars and so I ran with it.

Your journey in the industry so far, how has it been?

It hasn’t been an easy one at all. But it most certainly has been rewarding. But one thing that has really helped is to have my own goals and targets in mind. I know very well that I want to be the best and I know what it will take for me to get there. I think the journey is still to give me challenges to overcome, but the most important thing is to overcome them right? I won’t give up, that much I know. I plan to go out in history books.

Ambitiouz Entertainment, what has it taught you?

It has taught me a lot about loyalty and passion for my career. Ambitiouz Entertainment has given me a voice and a fighting spirit in the bigger scheme of things. It made me realize and expose my strengths, passions and weaknesses to masses and myself that I wasn’t even aware of. It has also assisted me to polish my skills.

Which artists do you represent at Ambitiouz Entertainment?

I represent all artists.

How do you deal with bad publicity that affects your artists’ reputation?

It is important to remind fans and media of all the positive things that the artist has achieved in a small period of time. It is also important not to stray away but instead own up and give a humble approach. Let people know you are also a person but one whose mistakes and successes are magnified by an entire nation, whether good or bad.

Is South African PR on a competitive level yet?

No, I don’t think it is. I don’t think that we are being creative enough, instead we follow methods and ideas that have already been there for over 20 years. We need more people to be innovative and really think outside the box and work with what they have. Whatever it is you are trying to sell will only be appreciated with a stand out, memorable approach.

A moment you’re really proud of to date?

Being asked to be on a panel of Women In Music, presented by Thiwe Mbola. I was asked to speak as a PR expert at the age of 25, making me the youngest person on that panel. Most recently is Sjava winning a 2018 BET Award for Best International Act.

What would you like the rest of 2018 to bring?

I would like it to bring more prosperity and success with the company and it’s artists.

A message you would give to industry personalities seeking to keep a lasting brand…

Stay true to yourself and be authentic. People fall in love with people who are true and give real life stories.

Meet One Shaman, The Artist And Content Creator

What’s the plan for One Shaman?

The plan for One Shaman is to introduce myself to the media industry primarily as an artist, and secondly, as a content creator. I really believe in the music I make, my skill as an Emcee and being in the competitive space that is Hip-Hop, I now have the chance to show that. I am very passionate about content too and I have a lot of ideas on how South African media can compete globally as far as our content and how we consume it.

Braam Baby is dope, what’s the track all about?

So ‘Braam Baby’ is a story about the modern independent woman who knows her worth and her value in the current climate of pop culture. It’s a story we all know too well but how I tell it is very relatable, cool and fun. It’s a record I’ve teased for the past few months and plan to release in Spring with the visuals. I’m currently promoting a record called ‘Yes Lord’ and an upcoming Mixtape titled ‘’Who The Fuck Is This’’.

The South African Hip-Hop scene is getting really competitive, what’s unique about you?

I’m versatile as far as my subject matter, I really enjoy the craft of emceeing but I know how to make good records too. I find a balance between traditional emceeing and rapping, as well as knowing what’s popular and adapting to that. I enjoy taking risks with music and will try almost every sound if I can pull it off. I approach every song like a film, regardless the subject matter, I need you to see it (the song), as well as hear it.

What does your brand and image seek to portray?

I honestly haven’t come to terms with that word, brand, I really don’t like it but to answer the question, my brand would be authenticity over everything. I am a 27 year old guy who is taking a shot at his dreams. I’m flawed like everyone else and I just want to portray that balance of life, the righteous and the ratchet. I guess I’m also winging it and figuring it out as I go.

How long have you been on the scene?

I have been in the media space for over 5 years now, as far as music goes, I would say I started buzzing around 2016 when I really decided to give this a go.

Where can people access your Mixtape?

My mixtape will be out on June 16, 2018 and will be available for free download and streaming via my social media. My current single ‘Yes Lord’ is available on all digital platforms and streaming services. Shooting a video for that in a few weeks so do look out for that as well.

Your dream performance would be where?

I have to do Back To The City before it ends, that is the staple as far as South African Hip-Hop. Before 2021 that will definitely happen, it’s on my list.

Plan for the rest of 2018?

The rest of 2018 is more music, more content. Shaman EP in September 2018 and something special for the West Rand in December 2018.

Kim Jayde On Juggling All Her Titles, Her Trusted Mantra And Future Aspirations

How was it like for you growing up in Zimbabwe then having to move to South Africa?

I loved growing up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It was a small, safe town with a great sense of community. Cape Town, and now Johannesburg is the complete opposite! A fast-paced, big city with so much opportunity! It was definitely an adjustment moving here, but totally worth it for the career path that I am on right now.

You hold a few titles under your name, how does each title represent who you are?

Each title allows me to explore a different creative side of myself.  TV presenting allows me to work with people in entertainment, modelling allows me to take on various roles in TV commercials worldwide; from a Brazilian Samba dancer, to a Middle Eastern girl drinking Pepsi. The KimJayde blog allows me to travel and share beautiful places and experiences, as well as teach my followers about the fashion trends I’m loving at the moment. No two days are ever the same; that’s the beauty of wearing more than one career hat!

Did you ever imagine that you would have achieved this much at this age?

To be honest, my mum always tells me “I never stop to think about how far I’ve come and how much I’ve achieved.” I have my eye on so much more that I want to do. I look at the top women in the industry and that drives me to work harder and push even more. I’m so grateful for where I am now but I’m so focused on where I’m going, so watch this space!

Is there a downside that comes with being in this industry?

It’s a competitive one for sure. Only a select few get the opportunity to even be on TV, and to be on a platform like MTV is huge! The pressure to maintain a certain image in the public eye is something I have never dealt with before. Also, in the public eye, you are expected to be happy everyday. Should I have an off day, or go through a break-up, or anything like that, I still have to go to work, stand in front of the camera and be happy. So there are pros and cons to the job.

What’s your mantra to always stay focused?

“Dream big. Work Hard. Stay Humble.”

What’s the one item you can’t function without?

My cellphone.

Any other aspirations you dream of?

I am a qualified Social Worker (Honours Degree in Social Work from the University of Stellenbosch) and it’s in my ten-year plan to start my own non-profit organization that will empower women and children through skills, training and education.

2017 in one word so far?

Blessed.

How do you manage to give all your titles 100% each time? 

MTV Base Africa is my full-time job, I am also lucky enough to be able to blog when I have the time and inspiration to do so. Pace yourself, that way you can give it your all to create a quality product.
